We had an amazing opening night for the SPORT: Iooss & Leifer exhibit...and on the following night Walter Iooss started off the IRIS Nights Lecture series with characteristic aplomb. To stay on top of what's happening and to hear what others are saying, follow our blog for the latest news!
Now we're proud to announce the next lecture in the series; a special double-header with Howard Schatz and Aimee Mullins
Howard Schatz is a world-renowned photographer whose work focuses on people, and in particular, human motion, and the human form. His images of dancers, athletes and actors have been seen in exhibitions worldwide, and showcased in three books Passion And Line, Athlete, and Character: Actors Acting . Schatz is the recipient of numerous awards including the Prix de la Photgraphie, Paris (Px3) 2009 in Photojournalism and the 2009 Trierenberg Grand Prix.
In addition, his unique exploration of the human form underwater has led to three extraordinary books of imagery: WaterDance, Pool Light and H2O. His work can be seen in museums and galleries around the globe.
Aimee Mullins first received worldwide media attention as an athlete. Born without fibulae, Aimee's medical prognosis for walking was bleak. Seeing a chance for independent mobility, doctors amputated both her legs below the knee on her 1st birthday, and by age two, she had learned to walk with prosthetic legs. Aimee was able to spend her childhood doing the usual athletic activities of her peers.
While attending the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Mullins became the first woman with a "disability" to compete on an NCAA Division I track team. She then went on the set the Paralympic records in the 100 meter, the 200 meter, and the long jump at the 1996 Atlanta Games using prestheses that were modeled after the hind legs of a cheetah.
In this incredible pairing we will hear from both sides of the camera - the shooter and the subject. Schatz and Mullins will discuss the unique role of sports photography in relation to movement, personality and performance and how those factors have been integral in Mullins' extraordinary career.
