"CALIFORNIA'S NEW HARD TIMES"
With Documentary Photographer Matt Black
Thursday, August 27, 6:30-8:00pm
On August 6, David Burnett gave a rousing lecture as the second in the POYi IRIS Nights series. It was a truly inspiring presentation (picture at left). Our next lectures, Dan Winters (August 13) and Michael Robinson Chavez (August 20) are already fully booked. On Thursday, August 27, accomplished documentary photographer Matt Black will be stepping to the Photo Space lectern to share tales and wisdom from his accomplished career. Black is a gifted artist whose work has been noted for its visual intensity, emotional engagement and social conscience. His particular focus has been documenting life in isolated and overlooked communities in rural California and southern Mexico. His work in California's Central Valley -- one of the most agriculturally rich, socially complex, and economically impoverished regions in America -- has been widely published and exhibited.
Be sure to make your IRIS Nights reservation now. Black will be making a special debut presentation of his latest work chronicling the impact of drought and recession in rural California. Since early 2009, Black has been documenting the rise in unemployment, homelessness and hunger unfolding on a scale not seen since the 1930s.
Black's work has been widely honored, receiving grants and awards from, among others, World Press Photo, The Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council and the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial.

If you are unable to reserve seats through our ticketing system, as we are often booked to capacity in advance, don't be discouraged... 10 minutes prior to the lecture we release whatever seats have not already been claimed by ticketholders. It is not unusual for us to be able to accommodate a few guests at the last minute.
Check this page for IRIS Nights updates, including our next lecture in the series, David Hume Kennerly.
