The Art of Your Story: Finding Legacy Through the Lens

Featuring Sascha Brown Rice
Event
PAST EVENT: Sun, Jun 10, 2018

Like America, the story of Los Angeles is a great tapestry of many narratives and diverse experiences. As shown in our current exhibition, photography is a powerful medium that can capture history. In this hands-on workshop, Emmy-nominated filmmaker Sascha Brown Rice will give participants the opportunity to use old photographs to uncover their own personal histories, share stories of the unsung heroes in their families and neighborhoods, and make visible the invisible. This workshop will cover the essentials of legacy storytelling, from the basics of how to conduct research and begin the documentary process to exploring the way that politics, economics, the environment, and culture influence narrative.

It is recommended participants bring a photograph of a possible subject to explore. It is not required, but the workshop includes a hands-on art making experience with an opportunity to scan and print your photograph. Your photo can be a candid shot or a formal portrait. The subject can be a relative, a community member, historical figure, or a mystery to be solved.
